Building Sand – Premium Washed Sand for Bricklaying
Building sand is a general purpose sand widely used in construction, especially for bricklaying. When mixed with cement and water, it creates mortar that is ideal for laying bricks and blocks.
Our washed building sand is carefully cleaned to remove dust, clay, silt, small stones, and other impurities. This improves purity and creates a finer, more consistent texture which is perfect for producing quality mortar that enhances your brickwork finish.
As a trusted builders merchant based in Willenhall, West Midlands, we supply reliable building materials to local tradespeople. Our building sand is available in:
-
25kg plastic bags – ideal for small jobs or where access may be difficult, also these bags are available for delivery via the pallet network to most postal areas in the UK.
-
850kg bulk bags – perfect for larger construction projects and it makes it more cost effective to have the building sand in larger bags, however the bags require crane offload therefore delivery is only available to selected post codes that can be seen on our delivery information page, or you can check once you have added the item to your basket.
The mix ratio for creating mortar for general bricklaying ranges between 1:4 to 1:6 (cement : sand) depending how strong you want the mix, 1:4 mix gives you better strength for heavier loading or retaining walls, where as 1:6 is more workable for standard brick and blocks walls. For most day-to-day brickwork many bricklayers prefer something in the middle, such as a 1:5 mix. The ratio can also depend on the type of brick you are using and how exposed the wall will be.
You can help improve the workability of mortar by adding plasticiser (mortax admix) to the mixture, the exact dosage is dependant on the specific product and job requirements, but as an estimate you should generally use around 150ml to 250ml per 50kg cement. Always follow the guidance on the container and mix well so the plasticiser is spread evenly through the batch.
Our 25kg bags are handy for small general repairs such as pointing and patch repairs on your property, best practise is ensure you match to the existing mortar as closely as possible, rake out loose or damaged mortar to a suitable depth, compact the fresh mortar firmly into the joint with a brick jointer tool.
