Description

  • Intended use: Intended for use in cavity widths of 70-85mm and to support 100mm bricks and blocks.
  • Hot-Dip Galvanisation Process: Galvanised post production allowing for a 50% thicker zinc coating than offered by other manufacturers.
  • Weight Capacity: Heavy duty steel lintel for construction designed thicker, heavier and more robust than its precursors (check table below).
  • Thermal Efficiency: Contains no base plate to aid the building retain heat and contains pre-installed insulation with an A+ BREEAM energy efficiency rating.
  • Fire Safety: Compliant with safety and building codes due to a 60 minute fire resistance rating, when finished with a two-coat-plaster.
  • Plaster Key: Indentations cover the internal leaf to increase plaster adherence.
  • Size range: Available from 750mm – 3900mm.

Must have solid, fully jointed blockwork infill to inner leaf.

The HD range reinforces construction projects utilising heavy duty, thick steel for strong reinforcement allowing for optimal load distribution. The HD70 accommodates cavity widths of 70-85mm and provides a well insulated support for masonry bricks and blocks.

Materials

Forged with galvanised steel S275JR, the Birtley HD70 is a frontrunner in its class offering protective, sturdy strength preventing corrosion whilst remaining an affordable steel cavity lintel. Extra measures are taken, namely a post-fabrication hot-dip galvanisation to achieve optimal corrosive resistance and a zinc coating 65µm thick, 50% more than other manufacturers, making this product a durable and efficient choice.

Installation and usage

Skillful engineering allows this lintel to be crafted with quality thick steel, however the product remains lighter than concrete equivalents without sacrificing any load-bearing ability. This allows the product to be manually handled safely and installed easily, sitting flush with three courses of bricks.

Installation wise, this lintel must be installed on a bed of bricklaying mortar with an accompanying cavity tray and requires, at least, an end bearing of 150mm minimum. Combining the aforementioned ensures lifelong alignment and stability. The lintel also possesses an internal plaster key, aiding plaster adhesion and guaranteeing a smooth finish.

Energy efficiency and sustainability

Globally, crude steel produces much less carbon emissions than that of concrete, making it a more environmentally friendly option. In addition to this, it aids energy saving by preventing heat escaping due to the absence of a base plate combined with the products factory fitted insulation.

Fire performance

Fire tested using BS 476:Part 20: 1987 standards, In the event of a fire, the HD70 steel lintels are awarded a 60 minute fire rating when finished with two coats of plaster ensuring buildings are compliant with current standards and building codes.

As part of an extensive structural support lintel catalogue, the HD70 fills its roles providing durability, energy-efficiency and stability while at the same time complying with building codes and remaining affordable without sacrificing the quality of the material. Formulated with optimal load bearing in mind, the Birtley heavy duty steel cavity lintel offers long lasting structural support at an affordable price.
