Rock salt melts ice down to around -9 °C. Below this, you may need a blended or alternative de-icer (e.g., calcium chloride).
Prolonged exposure can increase concrete surface scaling and accelerate metal corrosion. Rinse surfaces after thawing and avoid direct contact with structural steel where possible.
Pre-salting: Scatter up to 24 hours before a freeze to prevent ice forming.
Reactive gritting: Apply directly onto snow or ice to break it down.
Under typical winter conditions (around -5 °C), ice will start to break up within 10-30 minutes. Actual speed depends on temperature, application rate and crystal size.
